Learning to direct in public, during a heat wave.

Film Factual recently spoke with Zoey Sidwell about Travel Plans during the film’s run at the LA Shorts International Film Festival. The conversation explores the making of the short, the transition from acting into directing, and the oddly specific chaos of learning an entirely new craft while trapped inside a very hot car for a day.
Sidwell describes the project as both a creative experiment and a practical one. Small budget. Limited location. No room for distraction. Which meant the story itself had to carry the weight.
“The most intriguing movies are often those that focus on material that many people avoid thinking about in their daily lives.”
The interview also digs into the collaborative side of the production, including Sidwell’s work alongside producers Rachel Stander and Tracy Clifton, as well as writer and actor Krista Amigone. Everyone wore multiple hats. Some probably against their will.
What emerges most clearly from the conversation is how much of the process became hands-on learning. Shot planning, locations, post production, performance shaping. The glamorous stuff. Or at least the version of glamorous that involves spreadsheets and overheating equipment.
